£100K Saved for client in site clear up
Disposing of harzardous waste is a very costly business, so encountering unexpected volumes of hydrocarbon contaminated soils can lead to substantial abnormal development costs.
This is the problem that faced a developer client working on the edge of a former landfill area. The site was believed to be clean but contaminated soils were discovered whilst constructing the access road.
3R’s solution involved treating the soils on site to a standard whereby a proportion could be re-used on site and the remainder disposed of off-site as non harzardous material - at a much reduced cost.
Treatment was in the shape of an intensively monitored biopile, in which a combination of aeration, nutrients and microbes is harnessed to break down the hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. Treatment took 15 weeks and represented a cost saving of £100K to the developer compared to the costs of muck-away.
