Sustainable solution for legacy of former gas works

The regeneration of the New Haddo estate by our client, Bellway plc, required remediation work to remove substantial in-ground obstructions and to treat some 7,000m³ of coal tar contaminated fill/soils.

This was considered a potential pollution risk to the Deptford Creek, which flows only 50m from the site.

Soils were excavated, stockpiled appropriately and treated on site using stabilisation technology, which involves using a proprietary slurry. Perched waters were removed and discharged to foul sewer via the onsite water treatment plant. Treated material was stockpiled for 28 days for curing after which, much was re-used on site reducing the need for imported clean fill.

Finally a low permeability capping was constructed across each of the gas holders to reduce infiltration of surface waters and offer a further level of protection to local water resources.
